You may have heard the buzz around our new school initiative... PBIS and STAR expectations!
What is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support?
Positive Behavior Interventions and Support is a program supported by the North Carolina Department of Education and Alamance-BurlingtonSchools to promote and maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence. It is a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social and learning goals. We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning. Hillcrest will begin implementing this framework during the 2011-2012 school year.
What will PBIS look like at Hillcrest?
As part of the PBIS program, we will establish several clear expectations for the behavior we desire in all areas of our school. We will explicitly teach those expectations to the students and reward them frequently with positive rewards for their great behavior. The expectations for all student behavior will be clear throughout our building. You will be able to ask your child, “What are the rules in your school?”, “How do you follow those rules?”, “What happens when a teacher sees you following the rules?” Whenever a student or class is caught showing S.T.A.R. behavior, they earn a green hornet star. Weekly drawings are held and prizes are awarded to classrooms based on either a random drawing or the class with the moststars. It is our hope that through PBIS, Hillcrest students will also develop a more positive outlook on school and their learning.
What is S.T.A.R.?
Each letter of S.T.A.R. stands for a different expectation that we have at Hillcrest.
Iwill do my personal best by:
Showing Self Control. Taking Responsiblity for my Actions. Actively Listening and Learning. Respecting Myself and Others.
Expectations will be clearly defined in the hallways, bathrooms, and cafeteria. Students and teachers will be expected to know what S.T.A.R. stands for.
Where can I find out more?
